Ozone Odour Control Systems

Aquate offers a range of ozone generators designed to eliminate odours and harmful gases in sewer pump stations and wastewater treatment plants.

Ozone systems are used extensively worldwide as an effective method for disinfection and odour treatment in wastewater and industrial applications.  Ozone is the second most powerful sterilant in the world and can be used to destroy bacteria, viruses and odours.

What is Ozone

Ozone is produced when an oxygen molecule (O2) is broken into two oxygen atoms and one of these atoms combines with oxygen to form Ozone (O3).  Ozone occurs quite readily in nature, often as a result of lightning strikes. The “fresh, clean, spring rain” smell after a storm usually results from nature’s creation of ozone.

How It Works

The ozone molecule is highly unstable and has a short life-cycle.  When contaminants such as odours, bacteria or viruses make contact with ozone, they are destroyed completely by oxidation or disinfection. During this process the extra atom of oxygen is consumed and the ozone reverts to oxygen. The ozone doesn’t mask odours, it completely eliminates them.

How safe is ozone?

Ozone is a strong oxidizer but is not harmful to humans at low concentrations.  Ozone occurs naturally in nature and the levels typically used in wastewater applications are similar to those produced after a lightning storm.  Ozone breaks down rapidly and typically reverts to oxygen within ten to fifteen minutes so will not build up over a period of time.

If high levels of ozone are produced, humans will immediately smell the ozone before it reaches harmful levels and be able to leave the area.

Advantages of ozone?

  • Ozone is the strongest oxidant and disinfectant available for the treatment of aqueous solutions and gaseous mixtures.
  • After ozone oxidizes or disinfects, it decomposes into oxygen.
  • Ozone reacts with a large variety of organic compounds resulting in oxygen-containing organic by-products.
  • Ozone is the strongest oxidizing agent commercially available but as it has to be produced on-site and used immediately, it is safe to handle.
  • Ozone in its gaseous phase is a proven deodorizer for a variety of odorous materials.
